Three days of in-person diabetes training at your location, for your diabetes team.
The in-person DMU has trained First Nations home care teams in Saskatchewan every year for more than a decade.
Both programs come to your location. Choose the one that fits who is in the room.
Discovering Diabetes is our three-day program for health care providers and support staff who work with and support people living with diabetes. It focuses on practical ways to work effectively with clients, including communication, harm reduction, and responding to barriers such as food insecurity, costs, shame, judgement, and transportation to services. The program is well suited to mixed teams that include both clinical and non-clinical staff that support people living with diabetes and provides a strong overview of diabetes care.
Organizations can also purchase the Discovering Diabetes patient-education curriculum to expand their team’s access to training materials and resources in their workplace.
Diabetes Manager University (DMU) is an intensive training for health care professionals: nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and others working from a clinical perspective. Over three days we cover the science of diabetes and prevention, medications including the newer treatments, blood glucose monitoring and sensor technology, the emotional side of diabetes, nutrition therapy, and insulin therapy.
It’s built on the Diabetes Canada clinical practice guidelines, and every topic is linked to real world practice including the situations that don’t follow the clinical practice guidelines or diabetes textbooks. Participants receive over 20 hours of training and leave with teaching tools, approaches and resources they can use the next day in the clinic.
At Diabetes Training, we offer in-person training programs that cover a wide range of learning needs from the introduction to key concepts for staff new to diabetes, up to advanced training for those experienced in the field. It covers the latest treatments and science, built on the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines, and places them within a person-centred approach that recognizes what clients actually face day to day.
Everything your team needs for three days of training, plus planning support before we arrive.

Our host coordinator guide walks you through each step. In summary, the host organization:
Michelle Archer, RD, CDE is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator with more than 20 years of experience in patient care and professional training, much of it in First Nations communities. In 2025, Diabetes Canada named her its Diabetes Educator of the Year for dedication and innovation in diabetes care.
Michelle is joined by Carlene Schmaltz, RN BScN, CDE, a Diabetes Nurse Educator with 30 years of experience, who co-leads our in-person programs.
Between them they bring more than 50 years of working with people living with diabetes: a dietitian and a nurse, teaching side by side, which means questions get answered from both perspectives in the room. Together they have delivered training for First Nations health programs on and off reserve, health authorities and community organizations across the Prairies.
The approach is the same wherever we go: evidence-based, grounded in the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines, and in the way diabetes actually turns up in a real clinic, a real home visit, a real life.
In-person DMU programs start at $13,500 for a group of up to 25 participants (about $540 per participant), including both facilitators, participant materials and certificates. Location and travel outside of Saskatchewan may increase the cost.
Every program is quoted before you book, so your cost is set before committing to the training.
Up to 25 participants. About $540 per participant. Both facilitators, materials and certificates included.
“The DMU program has been providing our program’s diabetes education for the past decade. These instructors are providing the home care nurses and continuing care assistants with new practical information/skills about medications, diet, exercise and blood glucose monitoring. Their approach is one that helps the home care team give positive reinforcement to the clients they serve, while respecting the clients’ choices they are making to improve their lifestyle.”
Gerald Hoffman, RN BSN HCA(Cert)

We send a written quote, valid for 60 days. A 50% deposit confirms your dates; please book at least 2 months ahead.
Your coordinator receives our host guide, and we work together on room set-up, meals, registration and any topics to emphasize.
We arrive with all materials for three days of training. Afterwards, participants receive their certificates, and you receive the evaluation summary.
The core program follows the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines. Within it, we adjust the emphasis to your team: for example more time on insulin for home care nurses, or on nutrition for a dietitian-led team.
Yes. The DMU is also available as a self-paced online course ($697 per person, or $497 per person for 3 or more from the same organization). Some teams use it for staff who miss the in-person training.
You will be invoiced. A 50% deposit confirms your booking, and the balance is due 30 days after the final invoice.
Your deposit can be applied to a rescheduled program on a date we both agree upon.
If the program is cancelled, any non-refundable expenses (such as printing or travel bookings) are reimbursed from the deposit. With more than 14 days’ notice, the deposit is refunded, less any non-refundable expenses. Cancellation within 14 days of the event means the deposit is not fully refunded. If we cannot agree on a new date, the deposit covers the program organization and materials prepared to that point.
If we ever have to cancel because of an emergency, we will offer you another date.
Each participant who completes all three days receives a certificate stating the hours of training, which many professionals use for their continuing-education record.
